  Today, September 25th, 2008 is the day I learned that Cancer isn't all about death. It's about LIFE. And today I celebrate and embrace that life.
Today was a day of reckoning. I went to my doctor at her clinic, and from the smile on her face as she entered the room, I knew The Lord, Jesus Christ gave me a reprieve. I knew that someone, somewhere made a prayer, and continues to pray for me, my family and my recovery. And Jesus heard it.
I am a sinner, and I will continue to sin, for I am just a man. But the Saviour has forgiven me and will continue to forgive me. This God who became man spilled His blood for me during my 36 days in the hospital. And even before that He suffered, and today He spilled some more of His blood, for me to get the good news.
This is the only thing I can do, to write about His goodness, amidst this badness I am going thru.
Here is the exact report of my Bone Marrow Extraction last Sept. 19th, 2008. I will use the jargon the doctor used so however foreign it may seem, it is truth in it's purest, scientific form.
Bone Marrow Reading:
"Bone marrow aspiration was performed at left posterior superior iliac crest under local anesthesia. Specimen for minimal residual disease (MRD) determination was requested.
The bone marrow is diluted with blood with few spicules present. It appears cellular. Megakaryocytes are abundant and appear normal. Clumps of platelets are scattered in many fields. The differential is as follows-
Blasts- 3.0% Promyelocytes- 0.5% Myelocytes- 11.5% Metamyelocytes- 8.5% Stab- 14.0% Segmenters- 21.5% Lymphocytes- 8.0% Erythroid precursors- 29.0% Plasma cells- 4.0%
M:E- 2:1. Hemosiderin= absent
IMPRESSION: 1. Low iron stores 2. Mild erythroid hyperplasia
COMMENT: Compared to the bone marrow taken on August 7, 2008, the patient is now in complete hematologic remission."
I will do my second post-remission induction of chemotherapy on Monday, Sept. 29th, 2008. It will last for 5 days. I will need some transfusion and ALOT of PRAYERS. Whoever reads this, whether you're my friend, fan, family or foe, it doesn't matter. Much love and respect to all of you, THE TRUE HEROES. YOUR WORDS ARE MY STRENGTH.

 | sir francis, my mom was a canncer survivor, too.. i never asked my parents about what stage it was, pero narinig ko stage 3. she was diagnosed w/ ovarian cancer last november 2007 and she is completely well now. can u believe that? NOTHING'S so impossible w/ God. she had a round of chemotheraphy (6 sessions). CANCER CELLS ALL GONE. seen after her 2 ct scans. Lots of PRAYERS plus himalayan GOJI JUICE kuya francis. Kung alam niyo ang goji juice uminom kayo just like what my mom did. she was taking it while having her chemo until now. sisiw sa mom ko. walang hirap at takot. =)our prayers are with you. |

 | Hi Francis! I don't know how can I express my feelings I am experiencing now. We have experienced how painful it is to be in that situation. But it is a way to know who really are your true friends. It is also a time to know that your family will always be with you know matter how hard your situation is. It is not only hard for you but also for your family. At least you already lived a full life. My four year old daughter did not experienced that. She was diagnosed with the same illness also there at Medical City September 22, 2006. BELAY'S Journey
Let me share you the following that possibly can touch your hearts:
Last September 22, 2006, we rushed my four year old daughter, Belay to the emergency room of the Medical City because of high fever. It was already 12 midnight but we are still waiting for the cbc result. The ER doctors told us that they referred my daughter to a pedia-hematologist because there are abnormalities in the blood count of Belay. Dr. Alba was the hematologist who told us that they found 79% blast cells in Belay’s peripheral smear, which means that they are suspecting Belay to have Leukemia. That Belay should undergo a bone marrow aspirations to be sure of their suspicion. Belay was admitted.
September 25, 2006, Monday, at 9:30 am I accompanied Belay to the operating room for her bma, to comfort her and to make her relax I asked her to sing with me the barney song, after a few minutes she was given sedatives and I was asked to leave the room. It seems that it is the longest day and hours of my life waiting outside the OR. Praying to God that the Dr. Alba was wrong. That my Little Anghel will be okay. I wanted to see my little angel immediately. After 25 minutes of waiting Belay was moved to the recovery room. At first I was nervous to see her, so what I did was to ask my younger sister, Jing to go and see if she is okay. But Belay looked for me. I entered the recovery room and there was Belay lying and she immediately told me…Mama, inalis nila medias ko. I was relieved that she was talking. Waiting for th results to be released seems years....after 30 minutes Dr. alba approached me, Mommy talagang may abnormalities, ipapasilip ko muna sa kasama ko para sigurado. It seems that the whole night of waiting for the official result is that long. Morning came, Dr. Alba informed us that the BMA result is positive. The worst thing is, the leukemia of Belay is not suited for her age…Acute Myelogenous Leukemia, M6. As if my whole world collapsed. The doctor told us that Belay should undergo chemotherapy at once. My husband, Tottie and I cannot still believe that our baby can have this kind of sickness. I was praying that everything is a bad dream, but it is the reality.
September 28, 2006, Belay’s first day of chemo session. The chemo sessions will be for five days in a cycle. Unfortunately, Belay was not able to finish the fifth day because of high fever on the fourth day.
October 3, 2006 Belay was telling us that last night she saw a man sitting in the chair in the room. An angel she said. She is staring at her and before vanishing she told her “Di kayo nagdadasal, magdasal kayo.” The only question came out of my mouth was “Sinasama ka ba?”, Belay’s answer was “Hindi.”
October 10 –12, 2006, Belay was transferred to ICU because she had her nose bleeding, she vomited blood and there was a blood in her stool. A severe infection was noted. But God is good, He never left us. Through prayers, Belay was able to go back to her room 1009.
October 18, 2006 after almost a month of stay in the hospital we were finally discharged. God is good, Dr. Alba and Dra. Gimenez, waived their professional fees. Imagine, doctors, who almost everyday was looking after our little angel, did not even bother to collect professional fees from us.
October 22 – 23, 2006, Belay was again admitted at the Philippine Children’s Medical Center for Blood transfusion.
October 26 – November 17, 2006 Belay was admitted again at PCMC because of bleeding. It was then, that the superior of Dr. alba, Dr. De Castro was the one in charge because Dr. Alba was on leave. Belay 2nd chemo session was already due so, it happened. Unfortunately, Belay was not able to make it again on the fifth day of the cycle. She had a fever again. She was again, transferred to ICU for close monitoring because of internal bleeding.
November 19, 2006. We went to hear mass at the Divine Mercy Shrine in Marilao, Bulacan. In the afternoon, we rushed her again to Medical City because we saw a petichae in her mouth. She had her platelets transfusion again.
November 20, 2006. The CBC result was given. Belay’s blast cells increased from 3% to 84%. We transferred to PCMC that same night.
November 21, 2006. Dr. Alba told us that Belay is not responding to the chemo. He told us that Belay will undergo a chemo treatment either: pallative or aggressive treatment. The only explanation he gave us was pallative is mild treatment and in aggressive anything can happen to Belay during or after treatment. We have to choose between the two. We chose pallative, since we only know that it is a mild treatment not knowing that pallative care or treatment is for the dying person already.Dr. Alba also told us that if this treatment will not work, parang may taning na buhay ni Belay. We will just wait for her to deteriorate at home. Sabi ko kay Doc, how long. He answered, I don’t know how soon. My whole world shattered. The only thing we could do (me, my husband Tottie, and my sister Jing) was to CRY. My baby will leave me that soon? That same day, I don’t know why I asked Belay this question: “Nagkita na ba kayo ni angel ulit? She was sad, and the answer was, oo, sinasama na niya ako.” I told her that if she wanted to go, it is okay with me, I even told her, “duon walang pain, walang sakit ng tiyan, walang tusok. She answered, ayoko pang sumama. I love you Mama and she embraced me. I was crying then. Tears flowing from my eyes, the only prayer I had that time was “Lord, kung kukunin mo ang baby ko kunin mo na, para di na siya mahirapan.” She was crying, so to console her I told her, “kung ayaw mo pa sumama sabihin mo kay angel raf raf na samahan ka kay Papa Jesus at makipag usap ka na ayaw mo pa sumama. Wag ka umiyak anak. That same afternoon, I requested if my two other kids could sleep over in the hospital. I already decided to tell them the real status of their baby sister. After eating dinner, I asked earl to sit beside me and Yeng in one corner of the room. Yeng was doing her assignment, I told them what Dr. alba told us. Earl went to the CR and I followed him told him not to cry in front of belay as if nothing will happen. Yeng on the other hand is a silent crier. Her head bowed down never looking at Belay.
November 22, 2006. 5:00 am My husband and my two other kids went to school, Belay woke up and told me, “Alam mo Mama, nagkita kami ni angel, sumakay kami sa malaking cloud may kasama kaming mga angel. 10. Namulot kami ng mga stars. I instantly asked her, bakit hindi ka nagdala. She answered back, bawal daw eh.
Same day, Father Angelo of San Beda College, Rizal Campus visited her and at the same time anointed her at 3:00 pm.
November 23, 2006. Belay woke up at 7:30 am, she was telling me and her dad, alam mo dad, nagkita kami ni angel, sumakay kami sa kabayong may gulong. Lumipad kami ng pataas ng pataas. Pumunta kami kay Papa Jesus. I interrupted her, naglakad ka ba? That time her dextrose was on her right foot. Her answer was, “hindi kinarga ako ni angel binigay ako kay Papa Jesus. Kinarga ako ni Papa Jesus at inembrace niya ako ng ganito (her hands showing us how Jesus embraced her). I asked Belay because of curiosities, anung color ng damit ni Papa Jesus, she answered “red and green.” In our house the only images we have is the image of Virgin Mary, Sto. Nino and a crucifix. “Ang bango ni Papa Jesus.” Anong sabi ni Papa Jesus, “ditto daw muna ako kasi love niyo pa ko.” Paano ka bumalik ditto? Hinatid ako nung horse. I asked her again, asan si angel “natulog na.” I told tottie, that if ever Belay will go she will be in good hands knowing Papa Jesus carried her and embraced her.
November 24, 2006. Belay requested me to buy siomai. So I went to SM. Tottie texted me to buy a poster of angels and Sacred heart of Jesus. When I got back to the hospital, Belay was sleeping. When she woke up, she saw the picture of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, do you know what she said, Siya yung nakita ko may sugat ditto (pointing at the palm of her hand). It is at this time, that I believed that my baby traveled to see Jesus.
That same afternoon, we were alone in the room, I was arranging my novena booklets, all the hair in my body stood up and as if a cold water was dripping in my head because of Belay’s words, “diyan kami sumakay yan ang mga kasama ko,” pointing at the novena booklet of the Holy Trinity. I never prayed and read that novena. Even the booklet that day ko lang nilabas.
November 25, 2006. Belay had her CBC. Know what? From 84% blast cells, Dr. alba told us that it is only 10% now, but in the official result 0% blast. It is a big thing to rejoice and to give thanks to the Lord.
November 27 – December 3, 2006. Belay had her chemo. At long last, with the help of the Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Sacred Heart of Jesus, St. Philomena, Angel Rafael, Saint Martin, Saint Therese, Saint Anthony, Saint Jude, Saint Ezekiel, Saint Claire, all the angels and saints, Our Lady of Manaoag, and Our Lady of Remedies, Belay completed her chemo cycle without any hassles.
December 2, 2006. My kids with my mom, my sisters, and my nieces went to hear mass at the Lourdes Church in Quezon City, they saw images of the angels in the cloud. And they counted the angels, 10 QUERUBINS.
December 8, 2006. It is our time to go home! It's the Feast of Immaculate Conception. Everything is ready. Unfortunately Belay was not able to go home. She had a discharge of blood. Diapers full of blood. She was moved again in ICU.
December 12, 2006. Thank God! She was transferred to her room.
December 16, 2006. She was given her second verdict. Dr. Alba told us to just give her all the best thing we could give. Anytime my Little ANgel will go.
December 24, 2006. Finally, we are allowed to go home, at least to celebrate Christmas with the entire family.
December 25, 2006. We had a family reunion.
December 26, 2006. I called up some hospitals to look for another doctor who will look after Belay.
December 27, 2006. We went to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital unfortunately there is no doctor available. We passed by St. Jude Church, outside I was asking God to help us find a doctor. God do really answer prayers. In Fe Del Mundo Medical Center, there are doctors available. Immediately they told us to bring Belay since they will just be around until 12 noon. Belay was admitted. Dr. Dadural, Dr. Bautista, Dr. Naranjo was the one in charge of Belay. She had her blood transfusion. We've met Miss Mary, Miss Marijo, and Miss Joan, the nurses of Belay.
December 29, 2006. Belay was discharged.
December 30, 2006. We baked apple pie and macaroons together.
December 31, 2006. We celebrated New Year's Eve. She danced Boom Tarat Tarat. We watched fireworks.
January 1, 2007. New Year's Day. We are still at home.
January 2, 2007. We had to rushed her again back to the hospital because of profuse nose bleeding. She was again admitted. For transfusion and chemo.
February 3, 2007. We were discharge from the hospital
February 4, 2007. She had her thanksgiving party. She danced and entertained her visitors.
February 5, 2007. She had her nose bleeding again. She was again admitted.
February 6-February10, 2007. All day, all night she was wide awake.
February 10, 2007. Dr. Yuson explained to us what is happening. It is called the sunset syndrome. Anytime Belay will go. She was given her thrid verdict. I cried. The whole family was there. It's hard for a mom like me talking about death, about funeral.
February 14, 2007. we celebrated VAlentine's Day together. Her daddy bought a cake for her.
March 10, 2007. Belay asked me if I'm going to the mall. I asked her why, she told me to buy a gown for her. Unfortunately gown is too expensive I did not buy her. She cried and told me to go out of the room.
March 11, 2007. She asked me again if I'm going to the mall. She asked me again to buy the gown. I asked her "Bakit ba yang gown na yan, her answer was "gagamitin ko yan malapit na."
March 12, 2007. Daddy send Earl and Yeng to school, munitik na silang maaksidente.
March 13, 2007. She was laughing during dinner time. Kasi si Earl nag-eenglish. Sabi niya di daw marunong si kuya.
March 14, 2007. She told me Mama gawa na lang kayo ni Daddy ng bagong baby para wag kayo malungkot. Sabi ko ikaw lang ang baby ko.
March 15, 2007. She was just looking at us blankly.
March 16, 2007. we argue about the coke. she had her intrathecal chemo. She said that I'll give her a coke then she will take all her medicine. True to that. We had a visitor on that day....a golden bird, outside the window.
March 17, 2007. Belay had a terrible headache. 9 hours of pain. She was battling for her life. Begging that she would be spare on that day. Her last words for me......I LOVE YOU, MAMA.
GOD IS GOOD. He was with Belay and with us in our difficult times. Belay became the binding force of our family and my in-laws. She became an instrument for us to go back to God and to trust God with all our hearts. There are still sacrifices to be done but with our faith in God and with God on our side. I know, my little angel will be guiding us.

enweiz, juz so glad to hear uve been on hematologic remmission. good news indeed.. a stage where a cancer patient really looks forward to.umm... juz wanna share that i too, has cancer. ya..got it too.its Hodgkin's Lymphoma for me. a cancer in the lymphatic system. had it located at the back of my lung, near my heart. bin tru 6 sessions of chemotherapy and a month long radiation terapy. it s been 6 years since i had it. so i really can sympathize wd what u are going thru ryt now. really so hard and so painful yet kaya yan! wd all the positive attitude, u can never go wrong. pain will always be there but its pain that will make u realize the wonders of life and the meaning of ur existence. . and at the end of d day all we have is our faith telling us how lucky we are to be still living amidst all these. ... just hope somehow i made ur day a little liter.. so lucky to be here and to be alive.. and to be sharing wd u my thots.
